MARQUIS DE SADE

1740-1814
French

"It is only by way of pain one arrives at pleasure"

Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (2 June 1740 – 2 December 1814), better known as the Marquis de Sade was a French aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher and writer, famous for his libertine sexuality. As this is a family-friendly website, it is best if we do not dwell too long on the principal preoccupations of his writing. Suffice it to say that it makes 'Fifty Shades of Grey' look like Mary Whitehouse's autobiography.
