David Stuart Davies was an author, playwright and editor. He wrote nine Sherlock Holmes novels - the last was Revenge from the Grave (2022) and he has also created detective series set variously in London during World War II, New York in the 1930s and Yorkshire in the 1980s. He is also the author of two collections of supernatural tales. His latest detective hero, Rupert Wilde, appears in the summer of 2022 in The Dead of Winter, the first in a golden age series.
David’s three successful one-man plays, Sherlock Holmes – The Last Act and Sherlock Holmes - The Life & Death have been recorded on audio CD by The Big Finish. His play, Sherlock Holmes: The Final Reckoning, premiered in Edinburgh in February 2019.
David’s non-fiction work includes Starring Sherlock Holmes, which details the film career of the famous sleuth; and Bending the Willow: Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, which is regarded as the definitive work on the subject.
David edited Red Herrings, the monthly magazine of the Crime Writers’ Association for twenty years. He was the general contributing editor for Wordsworth Editions Mystery & Supernatural series, and wrote a regular blog on great works of literature for the Wordsworth website. He was an invested Baker Street Irregular and a member of The Detection Club. He gave talks and dramatic presentations on crime and supernatural fiction at various literary festivals, libraries, and conferences as well as on the Queen Mary II.
David passed away in August 2024. He was a great supporter of Wordsworth since the days of the £1 Classic paperback and will be sorely missed.
