Plato lived sometime between c. 428 BC and c. 348 BC. He began his philosophical career as a student of Socrates and went on to become the founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. He is widely considered the most pivotal figure in the development of philosophy, especially the Western tradition. His most famous and influential works include Republic, Symposium and The Death of Socrates.
